Kampong Chhnang Province Celebrates Groundbreaking of Six Major Roads Enhancing Rural Development

In a significant step towards improving rural infrastructure, the Ministry of Rural Development held a groundbreaking ceremony today for the construction of six roads spanning over 40.5 kilometers. The event took place in the Teuk Phos and Kampong Tralach districts, with His Excellency Chhay Rithsen, the Minister of the Ministry of Rural Development, presiding over the ceremony.

During his speech, Minister Rithsen emphasized the importance of this infrastructure project in stimulating economic growth in rural areas. He expressed congratulations to the residents of Kampong Chhnang Province, particularly those in the district communities, for this remarkable achievement.

The newly announced roads, which will feature both double-decker asphalt (DBST) and concrete pavement, are part of the Support for Sustainable Rural Infrastructure for Farmers’ Markets and Agricultural Commercialization (SAAMBAT) project. This initiative represents a collaborative effort between the Royal Government of Cambodia and several development partners, including the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the EU-AIF, and is being implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development.

As a cornerstone of the SAAMBAT project, a range of rural infrastructure improvements have already been accomplished, including the construction of 66 double-layer asphalt and concrete roads totaling 537 kilometers, as well as enhancements to six community markets, the establishment of four community camps, and the creation of five farmer collection points. Overall, this initiative aims to benefit an estimated 261,476 households or about 1,123,635 individuals, including 575,767 women, across 12 provinces, namely Kampot, Takeo, Kandal, Svay Rieng, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, Preah Vihear, Stung Treng, Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Pursat, and Kampong Chhnang.

The groundbreaking ceremony marks a hopeful new chapter for rural communities, paving the way for improved access and economic opportunities in the region.
