How 3D Printing is Benefiting the Construction Sector

Modern 3D printers can reproduce any real objects with users simply designing a 3D model in a computer, adding raw materials into the printer, and printing them out. The technology is commonly used in the production of all kinds of prototypes from small to large scale. However, how can 3D printers help in the construction sector? How will 3D printers change the construction industry?

One-Click Construction
In the future, commercial buildings such as offices, libraries or cafes will all be printed with 3D printers. The 6-metre-tall Dubai Future Foundation commercial building broke the record for the first commercial building to be built with 3D printers.
Engineers spent 17 days printing the structure of the building and 3 months to complete the entire site, reducing labour costs by 50% and waste by 60%, a good example for future development without polluting the environment at a reasonable cost.

Better Construction Method
3D printing technology will also facilitate the construction process of various projects as the developer can build any project by using the technology and print it out without any hassle with the limitation of the engineers and the higher cost as before.

Reduce Site Risk
3D printers will make construction sites safer. Accidents often happen at construction sites, some even take the lives of workers. 3D printers not only reduce labour but can also reduce accidents because this machine will handle dangerous tasks instead of workers.

Less Construction Cost
This technology will also help reduce the cost of construction materials. Since the number of workers reduces, some of the construction materials used by workers are also reduced. Thus, the overall cost will also decrease.

More Affordable Housing
As a result, projects built with 3D printers will be more affordable. Many new companies around the world are now using this 3D technology to build affordable housing projects. All of these homes are durable and can be easily moved. These future affordable housing projects will then help more middle-class citizen to have a decent home.

Although the capabilities of 3D printer sound amazing, the usage of this technology in the construction industry is still limited as the 3D printer can use only one type of raw material per printing. That’s why developers still need a lot of printers and some manpower to build the project.
