Vietnam Plans to Build Over 9,000km of Expressways by 2050

Vietnam’s Transport Minister Nguyen Van The has said the nation is striving to build a total of 5,000km of expressways by 2030 and over 9,000km by 2050, according to Vietnam Plus.

The ministry’s report issued last month revealed that Vietnam currently has a total of 1,046km of expressways in operation. The ministry is also currently building an additional 900km.

Given this current amount, experts still believe that the connectivity between the national road system and other means of transportation has yet to meet requirements. For example, some seaports, railways and airports do not link with expressways.

The minister therefore as set a goal to achieve in building 5,000 km of expressways by 2030, and 9,000km by 2050.

To do so, it is necessary to have breakthrough policies and gain the prime minister’s approval to complete all site clearance before building investment projects, he added.

Minister The also stressed the need to look back on shortcomings that made the ministry fail to reach 2,500km of expressways by 2020, including slow public investment disbursement and slow site clearance.

Meanwhile, for Cambodia, the first 190-km expressway is still under construction. To date, this US$2-billion Chinese-funded route has been almost 50% completed. (Read more)
