Technical Study on “Forever-Damaged” Kampot-Veal Renh Route to be Completed This Year, Expected to Cost US$60 million

A study to properly repair the so-called ‘forever damaged’ Kampot-Veal Renh road section is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, with an estimated rehabilitation cost of about US$60 million.

This is according to an inspection by the Minister of Public Works and Transport HE Sun Chanthol on Saturday 5 June.

The NR3 section from Kampot to Veal Renh has a total length of 54.3 km, which has been repaired continuously since 2018 with a budget of US$15.85 million. The repairs were almost complete. However, due to flooding, the 20km section, which has soft-soil foundations, was completely damaged. (Read more & more)

Therefore, the Ministry asked a private firm to study an in-depth repair plan on this 20km section. The study results show that:

The first section is 15km long with foundations similar to NR146B that is under construction. Therefore, the method can be studied and adjusted from the NR146B. This section will be paved with 26cm thick concrete and be 12m wide, which is expected to cost US$30 million.

The second 5km long section has a soft soil foundation approximately 11 to 17cm deep. The experts are studying the method to remove the soil and building pillars to strengthen the foundation. The road surface will be paved with 26cm thick concrete and be 16m wide, which is expected to cost US$ 30 million.

While waiting for the study to be completed by the end of the year, the ministry is also seeking a budget of about US$60 million.

In addition to presenting this study, HE Sun Chanthol also said that the restoration of NR3 (Chom Chao-Kampot) is 98.04% complete.
