MPWT Accelerates Work on Drafting Railway Development Strategy Master Plan

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has been accelerating work on drafting the railway development strategy before submitting it for PM Hun Sen’s approval soon.

Minister of Public Works and Transport HE Sun Chanthol said on Friday 20 August that the establishment of the railway strategic development is in response to the growth of transportation needs.

“The volume of rail freight has increased significantly in recent years. Thus, more development must be implemented to expand the network and help reduce road damage,” said HE Sun Chanthol.

He added the working group is now finalising the plan before submitting it for the government’s approval.

To date, Cambodia has two railway lines, the first line from Phnom Penh to Banteay Meanchey and the second line from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville.

The governments granted the Royal Railways, a subsidiary to the conglomerate Royal Group, the concession to manage under the concession investment scheme.
