Sihanoukville Selected as ASEAN Tourism Forum 2022

The government has decided to select Sihanoukville as the venue for the 40th ASEAN Tourism Forum in 2022, and the government has also pledged to continue upgrading and improving the infrastructure system in the province, according to Tourism Minister HE Thong Khon during a site inspection on Monday 23 August.

According to the plan, the 40th ASEAN Tourism Forum will be held at Sokha Hotel in Sihanoukville from 16-22 January 2022, but at a smaller scale than the previous one with strict health and safety measures implemented.

HE Thong Khon also stated that the reason for choosing Sihanoukville is due to the well-connected and recently completed infrastructure in downtown, especially the international airport that supports many direct flights.

Besides hosting the 40th ASEAN Tourism Forum, the continuous infrastructure development is a part of the government’s master plan to transform SHV into a multi-purpose special economic zone in the future, just like Shenzen in China.

The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction has also recently decided to establish a new technical working group to reorganise land usage and issue a new land-use policy in Sihanoukville, which is a part of the government’s master plan. (Read more)

The government has thus far carried out a series of infrastructure development projects to support this master plan. These include the construction of 34 roads & 11 roads, the expansion of ports & airports, and the construction of three wastewater treatment plants, among others.
