US$4.6m Japanese-Aid Container Freight Station in SPSEZ Officially Inaugurated

The Sihanoukville Autonomous Port Special Economic Zone (SPSEZ) has inaugurated a new container freight station, which was constructed under the “Economic and Social Development Program” of Japan. The program provided a grant of US$4.6 million to Cambodia, in response to a request made by the Cambodian Government in 2019.

“The new warehouse, along with the AEON warehousing project, will help attract more Japanese companies to invest in Sihanoukville, after investing in AEON Mall” as Ambassador of Japan in Cambodia, Ueno Atsushi, explained during the inauguration ceremony on 1 March 2023.

Sihanoukville Governor HE Kouch Chamroeun stated that the port had received significant software and hardware assistance from Japan along with experience exchange of technicians and staff in Japan and Cambodia, training both inside and outside the system, cable modem termination system CMTS, electronic data exchange system (Port EDI).

The port received a Japanese concessional loan for constructing a new 400-metre-long container port, a 350-metre-long multi-purpose port, the conversion of the shore into a 253-metre-long container port, and the construction of a deep-sea container port in the first, second, and third steps. Additionally, the port will receive two more harbour mobile cranes.

The new station is expected to bolster the SPSEZ’s status as a key port in the region and attract more Japanese investors to the area, thanks to its strategic location and quality facilities.
