Cambodia & Japan Sign MOU on Cooperation, Transmission & Distribution of Energy

The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) and Japan Insurance and Investment Agency (NEXI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on cooperation for the transmission and distribution of energy. The signing took place during the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) meeting held on 3-4 March 2023, in Tokyo.

The AZEC meeting was attended by representatives from Australia, Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, AZEC development partners, and Cambodia’s Minister of Energy.

Under the MOU, NEXI will assist in studying the feasibility of providing credit and securities for green energy development projects and strengthening Cambodia’s power grid and future electricity exports.

The project will initially focus on studying the feasibility of technologies and priority measures based on the results of the 2050 Zero Emission Roadmap Study, conducted in collaboration with the MME, JICA, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Additionally, the project will assist in developing guidelines for using solar energy on rooftops in Cambodia. The AZEC meeting underscores the shared commitment of the participating countries to accelerate the transition to clean, sustainable, and affordable energy while ensuring energy security and compliance with each country’s unique socio-economic conditions and energy technologies.

The AZEC community will work together to promote a transition that aligns with economic growth and resilience, particularly through innovation and knowledge-sharing on challenges and opportunities in reducing carbon emissions to combat climate change.

The meeting highlights the growing importance of sustainable energy in Cambodia and the region and the government’s efforts to promote green energy development.
