Gov’t Seeks Chinese Support to Build US$250M Bridge Connecting Kompong Chhnang & Kompong Thom in 2024

Cambodia plans to build the nation’s longest bridge together with the road connecting Kompong Leng district in Kompong Chhnang and Stung Sen city in Kompong Thom in 2024. The 3,300-metre-long bridge and 50C road was announced by HE Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister, Minister of Public Works and Transport, during a press interview on 9 March 2023.

The 58-kilometre road, known as the 50C road project, will be constructed with a budget of US$150 million. Construction of the bridge, which will be one of the longest in Cambodia, will cost US$100 million. The Cambodian government is set to request a total budget from the Chinese government for the project, which includes 100 drains and five additional bridges.

HE Sun Chanthol said, “The PM has agreed on the actual road option with a length of 58km, including a 3,300 metres-long-bridge which will be one of the longest bridges in Cambodia.” He added that the project has been thoroughly studied by SAWAC Consultants, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and no adverse impact on the environment has been found.

HE Sun Sovanrith, Governor of Kampong Chhnang province, stated that the project would provide significant benefits to the people in the province by reducing travel time and fees and promoting trade between Cambodia and Vietnam.

The 50C road project and the bridge construction are set to begin in 2024, fulfilling the announcement made by Prime Minister Hun Sen during the River Festival in Kampong Chhnang province in 2019. (Read More)
