Chinese Shoe Factory to Relocate from Myanmar to Cambodia, Citing Political Stability and Investment Incentives

Alvin Su, a Chinese footwear company, has announced its decision to relocate its shoe factory from Myanmar to Cambodia due to the ongoing political crisis in Myanmar, according to a meeting between the Ministry of Labour and the Board of Directors of the shoe company Alvin Sukali on 13 March 2023.  

“The main reason for returning to invest in Cambodia is because Cambodia has peace, political stability, rapid development, as well as many other policies to encourage investors to come to Cambodia.” said Hu Zhaohui, the company’s Chairman of the Board of Directors. 

The company plans to establish a new shoe factory in Samrong Tong commune, Samrong Tong district, Kampong Speu province, which is expected to start operating in June 2023. The factory will require around a thousand employees and will produce 700,000 pairs of shoes per month for export to Europe and the United States. 

During a meeting with the Ministry of Labour, Hu Zhaohui sought recommendations on the implementation of Cambodian labour laws. In response, HE Ith Sam Heng, Minister of Labour, welcomed Alvin Su’s investment in Cambodia and emphasised the importance of respecting the laws and regulations related to labour. 

He added that Cambodia has a clear strategic plan for the development of the manufacturing sector, and the government is committed to creating a favourable environment for investors.  

Minister Ith Sam Heng assured the company that if any issues arise, the government has mechanisms in place to address them. 

As Cambodia continues to attract foreign investment, the government remains focused on promoting economic growth while ensuring that investors adhere to local laws and regulations.
