Gov’t Pushes for Renewable Energy Investment to Meet Growing Demand

Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Samdech Hun Sen, has emphasised the importance of investing in renewable energy to meet Cambodia’s growing electricity demand.  

Speaking at a get-together with people on 14 March in Veal Veng district, Pursat province, Samdech Hun Sen highlighted that electricity is not only a necessity of daily consumption but also a major industrial demand for Cambodia’s economic growth and renewable energy, including hydropower, solar power, and wind power, remains the best option for generating electricity in the country. 

“Hydropower is still a good choice in Cambodia. So far, more than 62% of Cambodia’s electricity has come from renewable energy sources, with the remaining nearly 40%, we need to combine with other sources such as solar,” said the prime minister. 

Cambodia currently has eight hydropower plants, seven of which are operational, and one is under construction. The country also has over 150 megawatts of solar power stations connected to the national grid. 

Furthermore, with more than 99% of total villages in Cambodia now connected to the national grid, the demand for electricity has significantly increased. The prime minister revealed that Phnom Penh, the capital city, has a demand of more than 2,000 megawatts, which was previously only 30 megawatts. 

As Cambodia’s electricity demand continues to grow, the government’s push for renewable energy investment will help to meet the country’s energy needs sustainably.
