GOV’t Aims to Reduce Energy Consumption in Housing by 34% by 2030

According to official figures, Cambodia’s urban population is projected to increase significantly by 2030. This, coupled with the growth in housing, has led the government to set a national policy of reducing energy consumption in the residential sector by 34% from 17,981 GWh to only 11,826 GWh. The announcement was made as part of the implementation of the National Policy on Energy Efficiency 2022-2030.

By 2020, Cambodia had more than 3.6 million homes, with an average annual growth rate of 1.7%. Meanwhile, official figures show that by 2030, about a third of Cambodia’s population will live in urban areas.

As urbanization and income growth lead to an increased usage of electronic appliances, such as air conditioners and refrigerators, promoting energy efficiency in the housing sector is essential. The policy will contribute to the country’s sustainable development goals and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

To achieve these targets, the government will prioritize promoting energy-efficient building designs, using energy-efficient appliances, and adopting renewable energy sources. The government is also working to create an enabling environment for energy-efficient practices and technologies by providing tax incentives, subsidies, and regulatory frameworks.

Reducing energy consumption in the housing sector will significantly impact Cambodia’s sustainable development, making it a key priority for the government’s energy policy agenda.
