Cambodia launches US$53m power expansion projects with concessional loans from Japan

Cambodia has officially launched two major power expansion projects worth over US$53 million under the framework of concessional loans and grants of the Royal Government of Japan. These projects aim to strengthen the power supply capacity in Phnom Penh and the southern economic corridor of Cambodia. The inauguration ceremony was presided over by HE Suy Sem, Minister of Mines and Energy, and HE UENO Atsushi, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Cambodia on 27 April 2023.

This project is under the framework of concessional loans and grants of the Royal Government of Japan, which includes:

The first project is to expand the transmission and distribution system in Phnom Penh, which received a concessional loan of over US$47 million. It aims to increase power supply capacity by constructing a new substation in the building located in the Olympic Stadium and at the headquarters of Electricite du Cambodge, as well as upgrades to existing substations.

The second project received a grant of over US$6.5 million from the Royal Government and the people of Japan. It aims to stabilize the power supply in the southern economic corridors of Cambodia by constructing and equipping 22 kV power distribution equipment in Bavet, Svay Rieng, Poipet, Banteay Meanchey, and Koh Kong provinces.

Both projects have been positively contributing to the stabilization of the power supply in Cambodia. These projects will play a vital role in enhancing the infrastructure and economy of Cambodia, creating a stable and sustainable energy supply.
