Cambodia and Switzerland Forge Air Transport Cooperation, Paving the Way for Enhanced Connectivity

Cambodia and Switzerland have solidified their partnership in air transport cooperation, signaling a promising future for direct flights between the two nations. The agreement comes in anticipation of the opening of the state-of-the-art Techo International Airport in 2025, which is poised to facilitate seamless air travel between Cambodia and Switzerland.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was recently signed by HE Dr. Mao Havannall, Minister in Charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, and Ms. Francine Zimmermann, Director-general of Switzerland’s Federal Office of Civil Aviation. This significant milestone, reached on 23rd May 2023 in Zurich, Switzerland, lays the foundation for enhanced collaboration in the aviation sector, as highlighted in a press release from the Secretariat of State for Civil Aviation.

The MoU grants airlines from both countries the fifth right, which enables them to land and disembark additional passengers in a third country en route to Cambodia. This provision is particularly crucial at present, considering the limited demand for direct flights between Cambodia and Switzerland. However, the establishment of air transport cooperation aims to address this issue and bolster connectivity.

During the signing ceremony, Mr. Charles Vann, a representative of Techo International Airport, delivered a presentation to the Swiss delegation, with a specific focus on Swiss International Airlines. The presentation shed light on the progress of Techo International Airport’s construction and explored the possibilities of strengthening flight connections between the two countries by early 2025.

Swiss International Airlines also shared its strategic plans to expand into the Asian market and expressed keen interest in launching flights to Cambodia at an opportune time.

The State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) expressed its optimism that with the inauguration of Techo International Airport in early 2025, air travel between Cambodia, Switzerland, and other friendly nations will become more accessible and affordable. Equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure and boasting a coveted international high-level 4F status, the airport holds great promise for facilitating seamless and efficient travel experiences.
