Embracing Solar Energy: MME Unveils Rooftop Solar Principle in Cambodia

The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has made a significant stride towards sustainable energy by officially announcing the principle of utilizing solar energy on rooftops in Cambodia. This landmark announcement took place during a dissemination forum presided over by HE Suy Sem, the Minister of Mines and Energy, on June 13, 2023. Developed in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), this policy sets forth a clear vision for the efficient, transparent, and accountable management of solar roofing permits throughout the country.

Under this principle, the ministry aims to streamline the process of granting permission for the installation of solar energy systems on rooftops. Consumers who meet specific criteria, such as not impacting the national grid and aligning with the scale of solar energy development defined in the master plan, will be eligible to request these permits.

Furthermore, a quota system will be implemented to ensure equitable distribution among consumers who are committed to fulfilling their environmental and climate change obligations.

By embracing solar energy on rooftops, Cambodia takes a significant step towards fulfilling its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as outlined in the National Contribution Report for the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This initiative not only contributes to a greener and more sustainable future but also positions Cambodia as a leader in renewable energy adoption.
