Siem Reap River Rehabilitation Project Progresses: Phase II Reaches 40%, Three Bridges Achieve 50% Completion

Significant advancements have been made in the second phase of the Siem Reap River Rehabilitation Project, with completion reaching approximately 40%. This crucial initiative, aimed at safeguarding Siem Reap from flooding, was highlighted during a recent announcement on national radio on June 27, 2023.

Mr. Chheng Kong Sun, Deputy Director of the Siem Reap River Improvement Project Phase II, shared details regarding the scope of the project. It encompasses the stretch of Siem Reap River spanning from the Kong Moch bridge on the ring road to the Aranya village, Siem Reap commune, Siem Reap city, covering a distance of approximately 5,000 meters.

The project entails various significant endeavors, including the enhancement of riverbanks, construction of three new stone bridges, establishment of a concrete road on the opposite side of the river, implementation of an irrigation system, and the construction of a diversion dam.

Notably, the completion progress stands at around 40%, while the three bridges have achieved a notable milestone of 50% completion. The lengths of the completed bridges are as follows: the first bridge measures 36 meters, the second bridge spans 44 meters, and the third bridge covers a distance of 34 meters.

The second phase of the Siem Reap River Restoration Project commenced on May 16, 2022, with generous support from Korea. Its anticipated completion is set for mid-2024, and it aims to improve the environmental conditions along the Siem Reap River through the execution of four major initiatives.

The ongoing progress signifies a significant step towards bolstering the resilience of Siem Reap against flooding, while simultaneously enhancing the overall environmental landscape of the region. With continued efforts and strategic interventions, the Siem Reap River Rehabilitation Project is poised to deliver sustainable benefits for the community and contribute to the enduring prosperity of Siem Reap.
