India Expands Trilateral Highway Project to Connect Cambodia, Boosting Regional Trade and Connectivity

India has unveiled plans to extend the 1,360-kilometer trilateral highway project to Cambodia. Currently under construction between India, Myanmar, and Thailand, the highway section linking Thailand to Myanmar has been completed, awaiting its official public opening. This significant development was confirmed by Thai envoy Pattarat Hongton in an exclusive interview with the live nagpur newspaper on July 3, 2023.

Mr. Pattarat revealed that India envisions expanding the highway project to establish connections with neighboring countries such as Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and other nations in Asia. The initiative is part of a long-term plan to foster enhanced regional integration and trade facilitation. As per the same source, this ongoing connectivity endeavor is expected to progress steadily each year.

HE Nitin Gadkari, India’s Minister of Land Transport, further affirmed that a substantial portion of the India-Thailand-Myanmar trilateral highway construction has already been accomplished. However, no official dates for the opening of this transformative transportation corridor have been announced yet, indicating that further preparations are underway.

The overarching objective of the India-Thailand-Myanmar Highway project is to amplify trade relations among the three participating countries and facilitate seamless connectivity with other nations in the region. By minimizing both time and cost, the project aims to catalyze economic growth and forge stronger bonds within Asia.

Looking ahead, the Indian government plans to initiate transport services on this expansive route, including bus and train services, facilitating convenient travel from Manipur to Myanmar. With the projected completion of the entire highway project by 2027, these forthcoming transportation services are poised to unlock vast opportunities for tourism, trade, and cultural exchanges.
