Monument Aux Morts: A Symbolic Tribute to World War I Victims in Cambodia

The official inauguration of the Monument Aux Morts, also known as the “Two Statues,” took place at the intersection of Monivong Blvd., France Blvd., and Oknha Techo Ind Blvd. in Phnom Penh. The solemn ceremony, presided over by Prime Minister Hun Sen on 14th July 2023, commemorated the victims of World War I from 1914 to 1918 and symbolized the joint struggle between Cambodian and French soldiers.

Originally constructed and inaugurated on 1st March 1925, the monument served as a testament to the sacrifices of Cambodian and French soldiers during World War I and their collective victory over Germany. However, in 1975, the monument fell victim to the destructive forces of the Khmer Rouge, leaving only fragments, including elephant heads, dragons, and bells, which were preserved at the National Museum of Phnom Penh.

In January 2023, through a collaborative effort between Cambodia and France, the monument was meticulously rebuilt by the architects of the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction, in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and the Phnom Penh Capital Administration. The restoration project aimed to honor the historical significance of the monument while preserving the design by Paul Ducuing. (Read more)

Standing at a total height of 12.30 meters, the Monument Aux Morts features a 1.70-meter-high base, a 3.20-meter-high pedestal, a 4.60-meter-high copper bell, and a 2.80-meter-high statue of Cambodian and French soldiers. Drawing inspiration from the architectural concepts of the ancient Khmer civilization, from the Angkorian period to the post-Angkorian era, the monument serves as a visual representation of Cambodia’s rich heritage.

The inauguration of the Monument Aux Morts serves as a poignant reminder of the shared history between Cambodia and France and pays tribute to the brave individuals who sacrificed their lives during World War I. As it stands tall in the heart of Phnom Penh, the monument serves as a symbol of remembrance and unity, promoting a deeper appreciation of the past and fostering cultural ties between nations.
