Transformative Mekong River Bridge Project in Kratie Province Gains Momentum, Reaches 15% Completion

A large infrastructure project is swiftly shaping the landscape of Kratie province as the construction of a pivotal bridge across the Mekong River marks a significant milestone, achieving an impressive 15% completion rate as of July 2023. The project progress, overseen with a visit by the Kratie Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport in collaboration with CNC on 2 August 2023, attests to Cambodia’s commitment to transformative development.

The vision of this remarkable project is encapsulated in the comprehensive blueprint of a 1761-metre-long bridge spanning the majestic Mekong River, boasting a width of 13.5 metres. The bridge’s eastern expanse finds its location in the picturesque Bos Leav Leu village, nestled within the tranquil Bos Leav commune in Chit Borei district. On the western side, the bridge seamlessly connects with Prek Prolong village, elegantly positioned within Sop commune in Prek Prosop district. This ambitious infrastructure endeavour is complemented by a connecting road spanning 15.49 kilometres and an additional 16.20-kilometre road within bustling Kratie city.

Spearheaded by the steadfast collaboration of Cambodia and China, the project has garnered a remarkable financial injection of approximately US$111.98 million. This substantial investment nurtures the simultaneous realisation of two pivotal projects – the construction of the bridge and the bridge approach road. The tireless efforts of the renowned Shanghai Construction Company (SCG) and meticulous quality supervision by Guangzhou Wanan Technical Consulting attest to the calibre of this endeavour.

The ceremonial groundbreaking on 2 January 2023, witnessed the initiation of construction presided over by Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Samdech Hun Sen, and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, HE Wang Wentian. The embodiment of bilateral collaboration, this visionary project is anticipated to reach completion within an estimated 42 months.
