MoE Propels Bamboo Cultivation Kampong Speu for Carbon Neutrality & Export Growth

The Ministry of Environment (MOE) has embarked on a visionary initiative to encourage heightened bamboo cultivation, both as an avenue for export and as a pivotal means to establish carbon neutrality within the Chambok Community Protected Area in Kampong Speu province. Spearheaded by HE Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, this strategic move underscores the symbiotic relationship between sustainable economic endeavors and environmental preservation.

The minister’s recent visit on 27 August 2023, solidified the MOE’s commitment to fostering a dynamic ecosystem where economic empowerment aligns seamlessly with ecological equilibrium. Notably, this endeavor is underscored by the collaboration with LEOPA BAMBOO Co., LTD, a pioneering enterprise in bamboo processing powered by solar energy.

Minister Eang Sophalleth lauded the profound impact of this collaboration, foreseeing its potential to empower the protected area community. As local residents engage in bamboo cultivation to supply the innovative bamboo processing company, economic prospects burgeon. Moreover, this cycle contributes to reforestation efforts, harnessing bamboo’s exceptional carbon-absorbing capabilities. Consequently, the Chambok Community Protected Area inches closer to attaining the esteemed status of a veritable carbon-neutral community.

Central to this transformative journey is the minister’s call for LEOPA BAMBOO Co., LTD to leverage solar energy in its processing operations. This integration of sustainable energy aligns seamlessly with the overarching objective of reducing carbon footprint, charting a more efficient course toward the esteemed goal of carbon neutrality.

LEOPA BAMBOO Co., LTD, is fervently embarking on multiple avenues to amplify its positive impact. From repurposing confiscated bamboo handicrafts into export-grade furniture to ingeniously utilizing bamboo scraps from charcoal furniture production, their commitment to sustainability shines resplendently.

An indelible hallmark of this initiative is the collaborative agreement forged between LEOPA BAMBOO Co., LTD and the Chambok Protected Area community. Through this pact, the company procures bamboo sustainably harvested from the community, subsequently nurturing the growth of bamboo within community lands. This mutually beneficial partnership not only augments economic growth but also fortifies the country’s ecological equilibrium.
