Gov’t Takes Proactive Measures: Nine Standardised Evacuation Centres to Safeguard Against Increasing Floods

The National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDC) has taken proactive steps to establish nine standardized evacuation shelters. These shelters, constructed in accordance with rigorous technical standards, represent a critical component of the nation’s disaster preparedness strategy, according to the NEC on September 1, 2023.

Senior Minister and First Deputy Chairman of the NCDD, HE Kun Kim, emphasized the urgency of addressing the escalating flood scenarios. He stated, “The flood situation has been intensifying each year, with dynamic changes. The NCDC recognizes the need to strategize the placement of secure havens in flood-prone areas.”

To date, nine resilient evacuation shelters have been completed across vulnerable provinces. Notably, Kampong Thom boasts five such shelters, while Kampong Chhnang and Pursat each have two. These structures, built to the highest standards, are a collaborative effort between the NCDM and the World Food Program, with an additional three being constructed by the Ministry of Rural Development. Each shelter is designed to accommodate between 300 and 500 individuals, ensuring safe refuge during emergencies.

In addition to these shelters, local authorities have partnered with organizations, including pagodas and schools, to provide further safe havens for citizens.

Given the dynamic climate change situation and the frequent occurrence of rapid floods, particularly in northwestern Cambodia, the NCDM urges authorities at all levels and stakeholders to continually assess and enhance existing safety arrangements. These proactive measures aim to ensure readiness in receiving and safeguarding evacuees during challenging times.
