Battambang Earns UNESCO Accolade as Cambodia’s Pioneering Food Innovation City

UNESCO has bestowed upon Battambang the distinguished title of Cambodia’s first city to achieve UNESCO Food Innovation City status. This historic recognition was officially disclosed through a UNESCO press release on 31 October 2023.

Battambang, acclaimed as a city where culinary art seamlessly intertwines with culture and innovation, is now celebrated for its exceptional contributions to sustainable urban development.

The declaration underscores the pivotal role of food as an art form, leveraging this art to propel urban progress and instigate worldwide cultural transformation. UNESCO’s Representative in Cambodia, Mr Sardar Umar Alam, applauded Cambodia’s maiden achievement and praised Battambang for its cultural and economic influence, fostering innovation, and stimulating tourism revenue.

Battambang’s culinary heritage is a tapestry of delectable creations, capturing the hearts and palates of its residents. The UNESCO-recognised creative food offerings from Battambang encompass a rich array, including Nem Battambang, Prahok Battambang, Amok Battambang, Kralan Battambang, Battambang chain, Nham Luong Battambang, Kantouy Hess Battambang, Snam Nem Battambang, and the renowned Battambang Spice.

These delectable dishes are cherished by the people of Battambang province and now stand as symbols of cultural innovation.
