Gov’t Spearheads Inter-Ministerial Task Force for Phnom Penh Light Rail & Metro Ventures

In a decisive move to propel Cambodia’s urban transportation infrastructure, the Cambodian government has issued a landmark decision, establishing an inter-ministerial task force dedicated to expediting the study and development of the Phnom Penh light rail project connecting to the new airport and the Phnom Penh subway. The decision, dated 17 November 2023, under No. 178 សសរ, signifies the government’s commitment to transformative transit solutions.

The inter-ministerial working group, led by HE Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, comprises seven members. Tasked with critical responsibilities, the group will have meticulous assignments:

  1. To review and advise on the legal intricacies, procedures, and investment frameworks of the light rail project.
  2. To catalyze the completion of this crucial infrastructure, contributing to the expedited development of passenger transport to and from the city and alleviating traffic congestion in Phnom Penh.
  3. To make a report on the results of work to the head of the Royal Government.

The envisioned light rail or air train project, connecting Phnom Penh to Takhmao Techo International Airport in Kandal province, has the potential to include strategic stops, such as Aeon Mall Meanchey or AEON3, as outlined by HE Sun Chanthol in June 2023 during his tenure as the Senior Minister of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.
