ADB-Funded Wastewater Project in Kampot Enhances Environmental Sustainability with US$20m Investment

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has played a pivotal role by extending a US$20 million loan for the construction of a state-of-the-art sewer system and wastewater treatment plant in Kampot province. The culmination of this impactful project was marked by an official inauguration ceremony on 15 December 2023, attended by key dignitaries, including HE Peng Po, Minister of Public Works and Transport, and HE New Saem, Chairman of the Kampot Provincial Board, alongside a representative from ADB in Cambodia.

The sprawling project is strategically located in Kampot City, covering an expansive area of 395.72 hectares across four communes: Kampong Bay, Sangkat Kraing Ampil, Sangkat Kampong Kandal, and Sangkat Kampong Samrong. The wastewater treatment plant itself spans 9.84 hectares, serving as a testament to Cambodia’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable urban development.

Commencing its construction on 25 October 2019, and achieving completion on 30 September 2023, the project encompasses two key facets: a robust wastewater treatment system and an urban drainage system boasting a pumping capacity of 180 cubic meters/hour. The natural wastewater treatment component operates at an impressive daily capacity of 3360m³, signifying a transformative step in Cambodia’s wastewater management capabilities.

HE Peng Po emphasized the ministry’s dedication to fortifying the sector’s software infrastructure, particularly with the forthcoming law on wastewater systems. This legislation aims to delineate a comprehensive legal framework governing the management, development, construction, and maintenance of wastewater systems in Cambodia. The objective is to ensure efficiency, quality, safety, and sustainability, ultimately contributing to enhanced public welfare and environmental protection.
