Sofitel Phnom Penh Attains Green Globe Certification, Leading Environmental Innovation in Cambodia

In a significant achievement, Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra has become the first hotel in Phnom Penh and the inaugural ACCOR property in Cambodia to receive the prestigious Green Globe Certification. This accolade, reported by einnews.com on 23 February 2024, underscores the hotel’s commitment to sustainable practices and responsible tourism.

Nestled in the historic quarters amidst lush gardens, the 12-storey colonial-style Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra has not only secured the Green Globe Certification but has also embarked on groundbreaking environmental and social initiatives. Charles-Henri Chevet, the hotel’s General Manager, shared insights into these initiatives during the report, stating, “Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra is proud to take the lead in developing an increasingly self-sufficient business model that reduces the impact the hotel has on the surrounding natural environment and local communities.”

One notable collaboration is with Eco Spirits, a company dedicated to eliminating single-use glass bottles in the spirits industry through circular packaging technology. Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra’s partnership involves providing locally produced wine or spirits in eco-friendly, reusable, and refillable containers known as ecoTote. This initiative contributes to a significant reduction in single-use glass waste and the associated carbon footprint.

The hotel also features the world’s first low-carbon, low-waste spirits distribution technology—a closed-loop system that minimises packaging waste in the spirits supply chain. Eco Spirits achieve approximately 150 grams of carbon emissions savings per cocktail. Additionally, the ecoSPIRITS Forest Program plants one tree for every ecoTote purchased through the network, resulting in an extra 120 grams of carbon emissions savings per container.

Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra’s commitment to environmental responsibility extends beyond industry norms, setting a precedent for sustainable practices in Cambodia’s hospitality sector.
