UNIDO Partners with Cambodia to Pave the Way for Green Industrial Parks

The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI) of Cambodia has joined hands with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) to spearhead the development of eco-industrial parks (EIPs) in the country, fostering a sustainable approach to industrial growth.

In an official meeting held on 26 March, HE Hem Vanndy, Minister of MISTI, along with a delegation led by Mr. Sok Narin, UNIDO Country Representative, solidified the partnership, marking a pivotal step towards advancing Cambodia’s industrial landscape.

This collaboration, supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, will see UNIDO conducting a scoping mission to identify suitable locations for the establishment of green industrial parks, aligning with Cambodia’s vision for environmentally conscious industrialisation.

Led by UNIDO’s Technical Advisor based in Indonesia, ongoing missions will engage stakeholders and evaluate potential Special Economic Zones (SEZs) based on UNIDO’s stringent criteria, with the aim of selecting the most conducive SEZ for the Green Industrial Park project.

The one-year pilot project holds promise as a blueprint for fostering sustainable industrial ecosystems across Cambodia, leveraging UNIDO’s expertise garnered from similar ventures in seven countries, including Vietnam and Indonesia.

Mr. Sok Narin emphasised that the Green Industrial Park initiative underscores UNIDO’s commitment to implementing circular economy principles and optimising resource utilisation, echoing the organisation’s successful endeavours elsewhere.

HE Hem Vanndy extended a warm invitation to investors and developers to contribute to the success of the green industrial park, emphasising the strategic importance of selecting a SEZ location that capitalises on Cambodia’s competitive advantages.

As Cambodia steers towards a greener and more resilient industrial landscape, the partnership between UNIDO and MISTI heralds a new era of sustainable development, positioning the nation at the forefront of eco-friendly industrialisation.
