Cambodia Partners with Global Institutions to Pioneer Energy-Efficient Building Designs

In a bid to reduce GHG and combat global warming, Cambodia is collaborating with international experts to develop building strategies that minimize the use of air conditioning systems. This initiative, reported by Radio National of Cambodia on 14 May 2024, involves key ministries and institutions in Cambodia working closely with international organisations.

The Ministry of Environment, in partnership with the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC), is leading this effort. They are supported by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The collaboration aims to implement the “Strategic Project of Passive Air Conditioning System in Cambodia,” which focuses on architectural design and urban planning to create buildings with optimal airflow and lighting, alongside energy-efficient equipment and green surroundings.

Kim Roseberry, UN-ESCAP Representative, emphasized the significance of passive cooling in reducing energy costs and maintaining a cool environment in Cambodian homes and buildings. She stated, “Passive air conditioning will help maintain a cool environment without the need for multiple air conditioners, thereby reducing overheating and energy consumption.”

Cambodian government has set an ambitious goal to increase the use of clean energy to 70% by 2030, up from the current 62%, as part of its efforts to combat global warming. This project aligns with that goal, aiming to make Cambodia a pioneer in utilising building designs that rely on passive cooling.
