Kampong Speu Irrigation Projects Nearing Completion: Roleang Chrey Canal at 60%, Tasal Reservoir at 90%

Significant progress has been made on critical irrigation projects in Kampong Speu province, according to an inspection visit by HE Bun Hean, Secretary of State and Chairman of the Project Inspection Unit of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, on 15 May 2024.

The rehabilitation of the Tasal Reservoir and the North Roleang Chrey Canal irrigation system is nearing completion, with work on the Tasal Reservoir reaching an impressive 90% and the canal system reaching 60% completion. These projects are vital for ensuring water security and supporting agricultural livelihoods in the region.

The Tasal Reservoir Dam plays a crucial role in flood protection and irrigation for surrounding communities. Notably, it serves 120 hectares of rain-fed agricultural land and a substantial 3,518 hectares of mixed crops in Tasal commune, Oral district. The inspection highlighted the near completion (90%) of repairs to the dam’s spillway construction, ensuring its continued functionality.

In addition to the Tasal Reservoir, the ministry is actively progressing the rehabilitation of the North Roleang Chrey Canal irrigation system. This system serves a wider area, encompassing six communes/Sangkat in Kampong Speu province, including Kraing Krouch commune, Rokar Thom commune, Sopor Tep Vly, Trapeang Kong Sambo, and Chbar Morn city. Upon completion, the canal will provide a reliable water source for irrigating a total of 2,768 hectares of land, including rain-fed rice (2,463 hectares), dry-season rice (275 hectares), and mixed crops (30 hectares).

The rehabilitation works on the canal system involve repairing a 14,500-meter main canal, refurbishing and maintaining 27 existing structures (both large and small), and constructing three new buildings. The current 60% completion rate signifies steady progress towards this crucial infrastructure upgrade.
