Chinese Major Firm, CGN,  Eyes Investment in Cambodia’s RE as Part of Its Global Expansion in 16 Countries

China’s CGN Energy International Holdings Co., Limited. (CGNEI) has expressed keen interest in investing in Cambodia’s renewable energy sector as part of its ambitious global operations spanning 16 countries. The company currently manages 49 green energy projects worldwide and seeks to expand its presence in Southeast Asia, including Cambodia.

During a meeting held on 25 September 2024, HE Dr Sor Sinira, Deputy Secretary General of the Investment Committee of Cambodia, welcomed Mr. Liu Run, General Manager of Corporate Business Cooperation, and his delegation to discuss potential investment opportunities.

CGNEI is exploring renewable energy projects under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, a move aligned with Cambodia’s growing focus on sustainable energy solutions.

In response, HE Dr. Sor Sinira emphasized Cambodia’s favorable investment climate, highlighting the legal frameworks and incentives under the country’s Investment Law. Clean energy projects, he noted, fall within the priority sectors, further attracting foreign direct investments. The Deputy Secretary-General encouraged CGNEI to collaborate with relevant Cambodian ministries and institutions to ensure that potential investments align with the national electricity development master plan for 2022-2040.

As CGNEI already operates in diverse markets across 16 countries, including Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, and South Korea, its planned expansion into Cambodia signals confidence in the nation’s renewable energy potential.
