Cambodia & Japan Enhance Trade Ties to Boost Cambodia’s Cashew Export Potential

To bolster Cambodia’s agricultural export potential, particularly in the cashew sector, the Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) in Osaka have reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration. High-level discussions took place on 18 September 2024 at JETRO headquarters in Osaka, Japan, highlighting strategic cooperation to strengthen Cambodia’s exports of key agricultural products such as cashews and mangoes, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

HE Sam Heng Bora, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Commerce, underscored the longstanding cooperation between Cambodia and JETRO. He stressed that the renewed focus would open new avenues for trade and investment, emphasizing expanding the global reach of Cambodia’s cashew exports. Cashew is seen as a country’s flagship agricultural product, and efforts are being made to drive export volumes further.

At the meeting, Mr. Sho Hideki, Director General of JETRO, pledged support to deepen cooperation with Cambodia. He pointed out that establishing communication networks and creating business-matching opportunities between private sectors in both countries will significantly enhance trade and investment in Cambodia’s potential products.

As of 2024, Cambodia’s cashew sector boasts over 580,000 hectares of plantations nationwide, yielding an average of 1.5 tonnes per hectare. Notably, the country produced over 830,000 tonnes of raw cashew nuts during the first seven months of 2024, marking a 36.7% increase compared to the previous year. This surge has cemented Cambodia’s position as the world’s second-largest exporter of cashew nuts. (Read more)

Samdech Thipdey has further highlighted the strategic importance of cashews in Cambodia’s agricultural agenda, welcoming further international investments to help the nation realize its ambition of becoming the world’s leading cashew exporter, or what he described as a “cashew emperor” in the years ahead.
