Mondulkiri Celebrates Inauguration of New Water Purification System Worth Over USD 150,000

The newly completed small-scale water treatment plant project in Sen Monorom City, Mondulkiri province, valued at over USD 150,000, was officially inaugurated on 10 October 2024. The ceremony was presided over by HE Hem Vandy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation, alongside HE Ueno Atsushi, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia, marking a significant step in expanding the region’s clean water supply.

During the event, HE Hem Vandy highlighted the importance of this project, which is the first water supply initiative funded through the Japanese KUSANONE grant package in Cambodia. He noted that the collaboration with Japan has been instrumental in enabling the country to enhance its urban water supply networks, meeting the increasing demand for clean water across sectors such as manufacturing, business, and services.

The new water purification system is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, capable of producing 1,000 cubic meters of clean water daily. This will raise Sen Monorom’s total water production capacity from 2,000 to 3,000 cubic meters per day, boosting the Mondulkiri Water Supply Authority’s output by 50%.

Japan’s ongoing support for Cambodia’s water infrastructure development has been substantial, with the Government of Japan providing over USD 300 million in grants and nearly USD 200 million in concessional loans to date. This assistance covers water supply infrastructure projects throughout the country, including technical support to strengthen the operational capacities of the Public Water Supply Authority and private sector water providers.
