Major Advancements in Cambodia’s Rural Infrastructure for 2024

In a significant stride towards enhancing rural infrastructure, the Cambodian government has announced the completion of 271 rural road projects in 2024, significantly improving transportation accessibility in remote areas. The Ministry of Rural Development revealed these achievements during a recent meeting, summarizing the work results from 2024 and outlining future directions for 2025.

Minister of Rural Development, HE Chhay Rithi Sen, highlighted that the Ministry has successfully upgraded rural road infrastructure, encompassing the construction and improvement of approximately 940.71 kilometres of double-paved roads. By the end of 2024, data regarding the management of rural roads will reflect a total of 50,262 kilometres, with varying road types contributing to this figure: 6,723 kilometres of paved, 1,804 kilometres of concrete, and an extensive 31,704 kilometres of gravel roads.

Key accomplishments for 2024 include constructing and enhancing 271 rural roads, including 164.21 kilometres of concrete roads, 218.05 kilometres of gravel roads, and 12 new concrete bridges spanning 675 meters. Additionally, road maintenance and repairs have been conducted on 404 lines, totalling 4,272 kilometres, ensuring the longevity and safety of these vital transportation routes.

The Ministry has established three primary goals to advance rural infrastructure further:

  1. To continue expanding and enhancing the quality of rural road infrastructure.
  2. To maintain and extend the scope of rural road infrastructure services to effectively meet community needs.
  3. To research and implement new technologies, including updates to technical standards and exploring innovative materials, such as Stabilizers.

These significant upgrades are not only improving transportation efficiency but also enhancing the overall quality of life for communities across Cambodia. The government remains committed to ongoing development in these essential areas, aiming for a sustainable and connected rural future.
