Two Foreign Companies Partner to Launch Waste Recycling Park in Phnom Penh

In a significant move towards sustainable urban waste management, Vinci Construction and Sage Engineering have announced a collaborative project to establish a cutting-edge “Waste Recycling Park” in Phnom Penh. This initiative aims to harness advanced technologies for treating urban solid waste and generating clean energy, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for city residents.

During a recent working meeting with HE Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), a delegation led by Mr. Thomas Chauveau, Managing Director of Energy Operations and New Business at Vinci Construction, presented a comprehensive feasibility study for the project.

Mr. Chauveau detailed that the meeting served as a platform to share insights from experts who have been meticulously researching the project. They provided valuable data, the latest findings, and innovative technologies focusing on the treatment of solid waste and its conversion into usable energy.

Highlighting the project’s significance, HE Sun Chanthol outlined five key objectives for the Waste Recycling Park:

  1. Generate Clean and Affordable Energy: Transforming waste into electricity.
  2. Extend Landfill Lifespan: Reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills.
  3. Promote Public Health and Well-being: Enhancing the living conditions for citizens.
  4. Encourage Industry and Innovation: Develop solid waste recycling plants equipped with cutting-edge technology.
  5. Strengthen Cost Control: Implementing effective management in urban waste recycling.

The Ministry of Environment has also urged investors to establish more waste recycling plants across Cambodia, recognising that the country generates over 4 million tons of waste annually. Officials believe that increasing recycling efforts will play a crucial role in minimising environmental impacts and protecting the planet’s resources for future generations.

The establishment of the Waste Recycling Park marks a vital step forward in Cambodia’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship, setting a precedent for integrated waste management practices in the region.
