Kampong Thom Set to Become Hub for Cashew Production as Chinese Company Eyes Warehouse Development

Kampong Thom province is on the brink of significant agricultural development. Sinomac Hainan Development Co., Ltd., a leading Chinese state-owned agricultural enterprise, is studying the feasibility of constructing a state-of-the-art warehouse and drying yard dedicated to cashew nuts. This initiative aims to enhance Cambodia’s agricultural export potential, particularly in the burgeoning cashew sector.

The announcement came during a working meeting on 7 April 2025, chaired by HE Hean Sahib, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Chairman of the Investment Promotion Working Group in Preah Sihanouk Province. At the meeting, Sinomach expressed its intent to collaborate with the Royal Government of Cambodia to ensure that the investment project moves forward efficiently.

HE Hean Sahib underscored Cambodia’s promising investment climate and the government’s commitment to fostering growth through supportive policies. He welcomed Sinomach’s plans, noting that such investments are vital for improving local livelihoods and aligning with the government’s vision of establishing Cambodia as the “Cashew King of the Future.”

Sinomac Hainan Development Co., Ltd. is recognised for its comprehensive expertise across the agricultural spectrum, from crop cultivation to the export of finished products. The company is also notable for manufacturing agricultural machinery, including YTO tractors, and operates a dedicated research and development centre in China. Their experience extends to infrastructure projects like the Tatai Leu Hydropower Project in Koh Kong Province.

As discussions unfolded, stakeholders expressed optimism that this project could significantly enhance Cambodia’s agricultural landscape, positioning the nation as a key player in the global cashew market. The potential establishment of the warehouse and drying yard is expected to not only boost production capacity but also improve the livelihoods of local farmers and contribute to the region’s overall economic development.

This ambitious project symbolises a promising step forward for Cambodia’s agricultural exports and reinforces the growing partnership between Cambodia and China in the agricultural sector.
