Irrigation System Project in Banteay Meanchey & Battambang 75% Complete

Banteay Meanchey and Battambang provinces are making strides in agricultural development as the irrigation system construction project reaches a significant milestone. As of 7 May 2025, the project is 75% complete, thanks to financing from Korean Eximbank.

During a progress review meeting led by HE Minister Tho Jetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, key updates on the project were shared. This initiative aims to enhance irrigation and reduce flooding in the region, ultimately benefiting local farmers.

The project’s main components include:

  1. Rehabilitation of 6 main canal irrigation systems, spanning a total of 92.65 kilometres.
  2. Construction of 3 reservoir dams—Vang Heang, Pong, and Kanseng—totaling 20.36 kilometres, along with the rehabilitation of these reservoirs to enable the storage of approximately 22.8 million cubic metres of water.
  3. Development of 208 structures to facilitate improved water management.

The ambitious irrigation development and flood mitigation project is set to take 54 months, initiated in December 2021, with a targeted completion date in June 2026.

Upon its completion, the project is expected to serve the districts of Poipet, Serey Sophon, Malai, and Ochrov, directly benefiting an estimated 42,213 farming families. Local authorities and stakeholders remain optimistic about the transformative potential of this project, which is poised to elevate agricultural practices and improve livelihoods in the region.
