Hong Kong Launches First Automatic Hydrogen Charging System for EV: A Step Towards a Greener Future

Hong Kong is taking a significant leap towards a greener future with the launch of its first public automatic hydrogen charging system for electric vehicles (EVs). Set to commence operations in the second quarter of 2026, this innovative project is located at the city’s Science Park and aims to be a groundbreaking hub for hydrogen-based EV charging.

Pioneered by the Hong Kong and China Gas Co Ltd (Towngas) and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corp, the system will harness hydrogen from the city’s gas network to generate clean electricity for charging, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct.

As the demand for electric vehicles soars—over 110,000 EVs registered in just five years—this initiative is timely and essential. With around 70% of newly registered cars being electric, the pressure on existing charging infrastructure is mounting. The automatic system promises to offer up to five 7-kilowatt charging points daily, complete with energy storage for reliable performance.

Chief Executive Officer of HKSTP, Albert Wong, emphasizes that this project is not just a technical advancement but also a catalyst for the broader adoption of clean energy in transportation. The government is backing more hydrogen initiatives, aiming to position Hong Kong as a regional leader in hydrogen technology.

As the city explores these innovative solutions, it moves closer to achieving its ambitious climate goals while promoting a sustainable, low-carbon urban environment.
