Cambodia Launches Decade-Long National Rural Development Policy

New 2025-2035 Strategy Aims for Inclusive Prosperity and Significant Poverty Reduction in Rural Areas

The Royal Government of Cambodia has officially launched the “National Policy on Rural Development 2025-2035” a comprehensive strategy designed to contribute significantly to national economic development and reduce poverty among the Cambodian populace, particularly in rural regions.

This new policy defines a clear vision: “Building a Cambodian rural society that is prosperous, inclusive, equitable, and sustainable”. The overarching objective is to ensure that “people in rural areas have a decent living standard, are resilient, have strong health, live in a good environment, and have dignity”.

To ensure maximum effectiveness, Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet has instructed all relevant ministries and institutions to fully cooperate in the policy’s implementation. The success of this policy is intrinsically linked to rural infrastructure, which currently falls under the management of the Ministry of Rural Development.

The Ministry currently oversees a vast network of rural roads totaling 50,260 kilometers. This network includes 6,723 kilometers of Double Bituminous Surface Treatment (DBST) roads, 1,804 kilometers of concrete roads, 31,704 kilometers of gravel roads, and 10,029 kilometers of dirt roads. Improved and resilient rural infrastructure, alongside targeted development programs, will be key to realizing the vision of a more prosperous and dignified life for rural citizens over the next decade. Recently, the Ministry of Rural Development also inaugurated 9 roads in Tbong Khmum province. (read more)
