Phnom Penh Municipality is planning to construct two new underground water reservoirs and a new sewage line to help ease flooding as part of implementing the city’s development masterplan.

According to a report by Phnom Penh Municipality released on 9 February, the first underground water reservoir will be built in Chaktomok commune and capable of storing up to 3,000 cubic metres of water. This reservoir will also be connected to a new pumping station with the capacity to drain 3.5 cubic metres of water per second.

Meanwhile, another reservoir is set to be built in Tonle Bassac commune and will have the capacity to store up to 100 cube metres of water underground. This project also includes the installation of an automatic water pump motor which can drain up to 500 cubic metres of water per hour.

In addition, the municipality will also install a new 2,660-metre long sewage pipe to prevent waste water from flowing into the Bassac river, instead redirecting it to the Choeung Ek water treatment station. The system cross parts of the city’s main thoroughfares including Samdach Sothearos Blvd, Mao Tse Toung Blvd, and Sobet Blvd.

According to the same report, work on the three projects will start from this month (February) and is scheduled to be completed by November 2020. Upon completion, they will help prevent the city from chronic flooding during the rainy season.
