Saudi firm GeoStruxer has won the YII Envision Award for a high-tech rescue of a failing 12,000-square-meter grain warehouse. The facility, which secures food for 1.5 million people, was sinking due to unstable “salt dome” ground. By replacing traditional construction with a Bentley-powered digital twin, the team saved USD 2.1 million and cut carbon emissions by 44%.

Generally, standard models could not explain the severe 170mm ground settlement. GeoStruxer solved this by using PLAXIS 3D to create a digital twin calibrated by AI and InSAR satellite data. This allowed engineers to perfectly match the digital soil parameters to real-world movements.

Within this environment, they utilized the complex Norton Double Power Creep (N2PC) model to simulate how the ground would deform over the next 20 years, ensuring the warehouse remains safe and earthquake-resilient.

Once the soil behavior was mastered, the data was fed into RAM Concept to design a “floating” foundation. This software optimized a post-tensioned concrete slab that works in tandem with the soil rather than fighting it. By precisely mapping where strength was needed, GeoStruxer reduced the required underground piles from 2,700 to just 779—a 70% reduction.

The integrated Bentley workflow accelerated the design cycle by 35%, saving over 900 engineering hours. This “smarter, not heavier” approach saved 1,200 tons of steel and avoided 2,000 tons of C02 emissions. The project now serves as a global benchmark for using digital tools to solve extreme geotechnical failures while meeting strict sustainability goals.
