ADB Unveils USD 10 Billion Investment to Realise ASEAN Power Grid Vision

In a bold move that could reshape the energy landscape of Southeast Asia, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced a ground-breaking investment plan of up to USD 10 billion aimed at realising the ASEAN Power Grid initiative. ADB President Masato Kanda made the announcement during a meeting of the Board of Directors in Milan on 5 May 2025.

“We are at a pivotal moment in the energy revolution,” Kanda stated. “The ASEAN Power Grid initiative is set to modernise and connect power systems across the rapidly growing economies of Southeast Asia. With this investment, ADB is fully committed to bringing the ASEAN Power Grid vision to life.”

The investment not only focuses on enhancing energy cooperation among ASEAN member states but also aims to promote sustainable development in the face of climate change challenges and the burgeoning digital economy in the region. Kanda emphasized that the initiative is crucial for ensuring energy security and economic stability across Southeast Asia.

In addition to energy infrastructure, ADB is broadening its investment strategy to include resilience-building measures. This includes strengthening infrastructure, restoring ecosystems, and assisting vulnerable communities in adapting to climate and environmental challenges.

Furthermore, the importance of digitalisation has been underscored in ADB’s strategy. Kanda noted that access to reliable and affordable digital services is key to unlocking economic opportunities. “Our support for digital technologies is transforming lives by improving access to financial services, modernising payment systems, and creating national digital identities in the Pacific,” he added. “These advancements will enhance transparency and foster trust within these systems.”

As the ASEAN Energy Network Initiative commences, stakeholders are optimistic that it will serve as a transformative force in addressing energy security and promoting economic stability in the region. With the ADB’s substantial commitment, the ASEAN Power Grid vision could soon become a reality, signalling a new era of cooperation and growth across Southeast Asia.
