Banteay Meanchey needs 115 kilovolts of power while currently can produce only 30 kilovolts

Banteay Meanchey province is experiencing an electricity shortage, as it currently produces only 30 kilovolts while the province needs about 115 kilovolts of electricity. This was revealed by HE Oum Rath, the Governor of Banteay Meanchey province, during a press conference on “Success in the past 5 years” held on 28 March 2023.

HE Oum Rath confirmed that the government has been purchasing energy from the Thai side to supplement the lacking energy for the province, which is shared with two other provinces, Battambang and Siem Reap. Additionally, electricity is obtained from Phnom Penh via Electricite du Cambodge during the rainy season.

However, despite these efforts, more than 80 kilovolts of electricity are still missing in the province. Governor Rath added that only six out of 658 villages in the province do not have access to electricity due to their remote location and six villages in the Malai district.

This electricity shortage in Banteay Meanchey highlights the need for further investment and development of energy infrastructure in Cambodia’s provinces.
