Bentley AssetWise Helps Highways England Cut Road Closures and Improve Traffic Flow

Highways England has transformed the way it manages England’s Strategic Road Network by using Bentley Systems’ AssetWise platform to power its cloud-based Network Occupancy Management System (NOMS).

The software gives engineers and asset managers a real-time view of road closures, maintenance activities, and infrastructure assets on a single digital map, making it easier to plan work, avoid scheduling conflicts, and respond quickly to unexpected events.

By replacing legacy systems with a centralized digital platform, AssetWise enables teams, local authorities, contractors, and emergency services to share information instantly, improving collaboration and decision-making. The software also tracks road closures in real time, automatically detects event clashes, and helps minimize traffic disruption while improving worker safety.

The results have been significant. Highways England expects to reduce around 3,600 road closures each year, saving approximately GBP 7 million annually while cutting 14,400 hours of maintenance work through better coordination.

The system is also projected to deliver a 1,651% return on investment in its first year, demonstrating how Bentley’s digital asset management technology helps infrastructure operators reduce costs, improve efficiency, and keep traffic moving more smoothly.
