Bentley Systems Advances Data-Driven Engineering with MicroStation and iModels

Bentley Systems is helping engineering teams modernize project delivery by shifting from traditional file-based workflows to a data-driven approach using MicroStation and iModels.

Engineers can continue working in familiar CAD software such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, and Revit while keeping standard file formats like DWG, DGN, and RVT. Instead of exchanging files by email, project data is published into iModels, where it is continuously updated and shared across teams.

Throughout the project, iModels allow engineers to combine models from different disciplines into a single environment for visualization, coordination, clash detection, and quality reviews.

As the data passes through each review stage, it is verified before moving to the next phase, helping ensure that everyone works from accurate and up-to-date information. This reduces data silos, improves collaboration between contractors and engineering teams, and creates a single source of truth for the entire project.

At project completion, the verified project model is delivered to the asset owner as an intelligent digital twin that accurately reflects the finished infrastructure. Because updates made in the original CAD files automatically flow through the entire workflow, the final model remains consistent and reliable.

Bentley says this data-driven approach improves engineering efficiency, streamlines project coordination, and provides owners with valuable digital asset information that can support operations and maintenance throughout the infrastructure’s lifecycle.
