Bentley Systems Highlights Open Engineering Software for Climate-Resilient Infrastructure

Bentley Systems has emphasized the growing importance of open engineering software and connected data in helping infrastructure organizations build greater resilience against climate change.

In the latest episode of its Bentley Horizons podcast, the infrastructure engineering software company showcased how digital twins, reality capture, and generative artificial intelligence (AI) can support the planning, design, and operation of resilient infrastructure. The discussion featured New York City’s Big U flood protection project, which was developed in response to the devastating impact of Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

At the ArchiTech Network Summit in London, Bentley demonstrated an immersive digital model of the Big U using advanced reality capture technologies, including Gaussian splats, digital twins, and generative AI. The visualization allowed participants to experience how flooding affected critical infrastructure and how future flood defenses could better protect the city.

Bentley said resilient infrastructure depends not only on stronger physical assets but also on software platforms that enable seamless data sharing throughout the entire infrastructure lifecycle. The company advocates for open standards and interoperable systems that allow information to flow across design, construction, operations, and maintenance, helping organizations improve collaboration and make better-informed decisions.

According to Bentley, as infrastructure assets remain in service for decades, maintaining accessible and connected engineering data will be essential for supporting long-term resilience and enabling AI-powered innovation across the built environment.
