Cambodia Achieves Major Milestone in Landmine Clearance Efforts

In a significant development for national safety, the Cambodian government has successfully cleared and destroyed over 4.46 million landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXOs) as of July 2025. This accomplishment, primarily concentrated in the nation’s interior regions, marks a pivotal step in efforts to ensure the safety of Cambodian citizens and promote socio-economic development.

HE Heng Ratana, the Royal Government Delegate in Charge of the Cambodian Mine Action Center, reported this achievement during a briefing on July 21, 2025. He emphasized that Cambodia remains committed to the Ottawa International Mine Ban Convention, actively participating in its implementation both domestically and internationally since becoming a full member in 2000.

The historical context reveals that between 4 and 6 million anti-personnel mines were deployed during past conflicts, posing continued threats to civilian safety. To combat this, the Cambodian government has launched a comprehensive mine clearance campaign over the past 32 years. By February 2025, this initiative had resulted in the clearance of approximately 3,297 square kilometers of land across 15 provinces and capital cities, as noted by Prime Minister Hun Manet during the 26th anniversary of National Mine Awareness Day. “This extensive effort to eliminate landmines not only protects citizens but also paves the way for development across the country,” said HE Ratana. “The path to a mine-free Cambodia is crucial for the safety and future prosperity of our people.”

As clearance activities continue, Cambodia’s determination to overcome the legacy of conflict remains steadfast, bringing hope for a safer and more secure future.
