Cambodia Requests France to Study Feasibility of Rail Transport System in Phnom Penh

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has requested the French Development Agency (AFD) to review the feasibility study of a tramway system in Phnom Penh to help reduce traffic congestion.

The proposal was made during a working meeting on 3 May 2022 between HE Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport, with HE Jacques Pellet, Ambassador of France to Cambodia, and Ophelie Bourhis, Director of the French Development Agency (AFD), and other stakeholders.

On that occasion, HE Sun Chanthol considered that the rapid development in the field of road infrastructure of Cambodia is due to the efforts of the ministry itself under the wise leadership of the Government of Cambodia and other development partners including France.

Additionally, HE Sun Chanthol also informed the French side that the main infrastructure development projects of Cambodia include a master plan for infrastructure development, a road network, a water transport master plan, a railway transport plan, a logistics master plan, and operating system project study, an automated guideway transit (AGT), subway system and monorail development project study.

In addition, HE Sun Chanthol requested the French Development Agency to review the feasibility study of a tramway system in Phnom Penh to help reduce traffic congestion in Phnom Penh and help promote the railway system.

In the meeting, Cambodia and France announced their joint commitment to further strengthen closer cooperation between Cambodia and the French Development Agency (AFD).
