Gov’t Urges Japan to Invest in Building EV Charging Stations in Cambodia

The Cambodian government has urged Japanese companies to invest in building more EV charging stations in Cambodia to further promote the use of EVs.

The request was made during a bilateral meeting between HE Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport, and HE Mori Masafumi, Special Adviser to the Prime Minister of Japan on 13 November.

HE Sun Chanthol said that the usage of EVs will help reduce carbon emissions, aiming for a goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

“To promote this, the Ministry of Economy and Finance has reduced the import tax to just over 60% of the price of electric vehicles,” said HE Sun Chanthol.

Toyota, a Japanese company, has also asked Cambodia to consider the possibility of reducing import duties on hybrid vehicles to help Cambodia achieve its carbon neutrality target by 2050. (Read more)

As of 30 September 2022, Cambodia has a total of 557 registered electric vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles.
