Advancing Cambodia’s Maritime Ambition: Sihanoukville Deep-Sea Terminal Reaches Significant Construction Milestone

Phase one of the new container terminal achieves nearly 60 percent completion as the government accelerates its vision for a regional logistics hub

The construction of the first phase of the Sihanoukville new deep-sea container terminal has made substantial progress, reaching 57.40 percent completion as of early 2026. During a review of the construction site’s progress and safety standards held on January 30, 2026, technical leaders from the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port confirmed that the project remains on track toward its goal of revolutionizing the nation’s shipping capabilities.

This initial stage of development, valued at approximately 243 million dollars, features a terminal 350 meters in length and 14.5 meters in depth. Once operational, this facility will enable the port to accommodate 93 percent of large ships passing through the Asia-Pacific region, a dramatic increase from its current capacity. By allowing ships with up to 4,000 standard containers to dock directly, the project is expected to reduce sea freight costs by approximately 200 dollars per container, making Cambodian exports more competitive on the global stage.

This expansion is part of a larger three-phase master plan supported by the Japanese government through concessional loans. Future phases will further deepen the port to 16.5 and 17.5 meters, eventually allowing massive vessels from Europe and the Americas to reach Cambodia directly. Through these strategic investments, Cambodia aims to transform Sihanoukville from a feeder port into a leading international maritime gateway by 2030, fostering sustainable economic growth and industrial modernization.

It is worth recalling that the construction site of the first phase of the deep-water container terminal project, worth over $243 million in Sihanoukville, was opened under the presidency of His Majesty Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia, on December 22, 2023. (read more)
