In an illustrious recognition of its rich cultural heritage, Cambodia has been named Asia’s leading cultural tourism destination for the year 2023, the Ministry of Tourism of Cambodia confirmed on 28 February 2024. This prestigious accolade was awarded by the World Travel Awards, known globally for its critical assessment and acknowledgement of excellence in the travel, hospitality, and tourism industries.

According to sources from the World Travel Awards, Cambodia outshone six other contenders for the coveted title, including India, Japan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. This victory not only spotlights Cambodia’s unique cultural allure but also solidifies its status as a premier destination for cultural aficionados worldwide.

Renowned for its enchanting World Heritage Sites, including the ancient marvels of Sambor Prei Kuk in Kampong Thom, Preah Vihear and Koh Ker in Preah Vihear, along with the iconic Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia’s rich tapestry of history offers an unrivalled experience to visitors. These sites serve as a testament to the nation’s vibrant past and its enduring legacy.

Further boosting the significance of this achievement, data from the MoT indicates that the ASEAN region welcomed 5.45 million international tourists in 2023. This influx contributed approximately US$3.08 billion to the economy, underscoring the pivotal role of tourism in catalysing economic growth and representing 7.5% of the country’s GDP.
