Cambodia Shines as a Gold Refining Hub: 9.5 Tons of Gold Processed by 2023

In a testament to Cambodia’s growing prowess in the mining sector, industrial gold refinery plants have successfully processed a total of 9.5 tons of gold ore from the commencement of commercial gold production in 2021 to the conclusion of 2023. This significant achievement was spotlighted in a video document released by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, showcasing major milestones in the development of the energy, mines, and oil sectors on 4 January 2024.

The mining sector has proven to be a robust contributor to Cambodia’s economic landscape, with royalties from the sector amounting to an impressive US$50 million in 2023. This stands as a remarkable surge from the modest US$2 million recorded in 2013, underscoring the sector’s substantial growth and economic impact.

“The vision of the Royal Government of Cambodia for the mining sector is to develop mine resources for economic and social benefits with good governance and high environmental responsibility,” affirmed the ministry.

To facilitate responsible and efficient mining operations, the Ministry has granted gold mining licenses to nine companies, with six already operational and three in the process of establishing their business sites. Among the operational entities, Renaissance Minerals (Cambodia) Ltd, situated in O’Khvav, Keo Seima district, Mondulkiri province, has emerged as a standout performer, demonstrating the highest yields among the six companies.

HE Keo Rattanak, Minister of MME, emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring sustainable and responsible mining practices. This commitment aligns with the broader vision of harnessing Cambodia’s mineral resources for both economic growth and societal well-being.
